By Hand is a series produced by Andrea Hungerford three times per year that explores locations around the country that have developed their own unique "maker communities" where people who love to make, love to learn to make, and love to support makers have found a common sense of purpose.

Each of these geographic "clusters" has its own unique characteristics, and those characteristics influence the artists who live and work there. Each issue of By Hand is a place-based celebration of these communities of makers, focused primarily on the fiber and fabric industry, as well as highlighting artists in other media who share the same philosophy as fiber and fabric artists of functional beauty. Additionally each issue includes patterns, projects, photo essays, day trips, foodie excursions, and other write-ups of aspects unique to the featured city or region.

We are "making communities" even where physical proximity isn't possible, by sharing our stories and journeys and images with each other.

By Hand: Making Communities Lookbook No. 4 explores the Puget Sound region of the Pacific Northwest. Water, in its many forms, permutations, and colors, is ever-present in this part of the country: bays and passages, low-lying fog and morning mist, drizzling rain and dark, roiling storm clouds. The shine of the light on water, the palette of foggy and stormy greys, the colors of the conifer forests, all influence the designers and makers we met during our travels here. By Hand travels through the Snoqualmie and Skagit Valleys, where we visit Tolt Yarn & Wool, meet the YOTH and Spincycle yarn dyers, and walk through the fields of Jello Mold flower farm; then we travel to Whidbey and Bainbridge Islands, touring Abundant Fiber Mill, Churchmouse Yarns & Teas, and the farm and dye fields of Local Color Fiber Studio, and finally through Seattle and southwards, where we stop in to swoon over the fabrics at Drygoods Design, the saturated colors of Hazel Knits yarn, the hand-poured and custom-scented candles of Wax & Wool Etc., and the storytelling quilts of Wise Craft.

Find projects and patterns that feature the our makers’ materials and sources of inspiration, including a recipe for cookies perfect for welcoming the coming fall months; embroidery and quilting projects; and knit patterns for accessories, an icelandic-inspired colorwork sweater, a sheepy cabled poncho, and even children’s beach hoodies. We hope you enjoy your virtual travels around Puget Sound and come to love the region as much as we do!
