Class Date: May 10

About this class:

In “Design Your Own Cable Chart,” we’ll take a playful, puzzle-solving approach to designing your very own cabling creation that you can incorporate into your next project. We will talk about where to find inspiration, and we’ll also explore some common cable motifs and what to consider when mixing and matching different cable maneuvers. We will also explore establishing repeats and how to go out of the box and experiment with your very own cable knitting idea.

Each participant will receive their very own, reusable charting kit (yours to keep!) to sketch out their cabling concept. We’ll move shapes and symbols around the page to see what works, and then we’ll use yarn and needles to see if the chart can be successfully knit up into a real fabric. Then it’s up to you to apply your design to whatever you like, whether that’s a scarf, a hat, or a sweater. And for those who want to take it to the next level, we’ll discuss some software options to expand your ideas.

Whether you are thinking about publishing a pattern or if you just want to play around with some new creative ideas, this class will set you up to thinking about cable charts in a fresh way!

Cost: $70 for one 2-hour session.

Required Skills:
This is an intermediate level class. Participants should already have experience with cabling and reading cable knitting charts, and they should also be comfortable with casting on/binding off, and knitting and purling on their own.

Required Materials:

  • Approximately 50-75 yards of yarn in your preferred weight to use for swatching during the class. A partial skein from your stash is OK! The best kinds of yarn are those that are more cable-friendly (like solid or semi-solid colors, and round springy yarns with multiple plies). If you’re stuck trying to choose, pick a nice worsted weight yarn.

  • Circular or straight needles in a size appropriate for knitting the yarn you choose to bring.

  • A cable needle in a size/thickness that will go well with the size working needle you choose to bring.

  • Your own charting kit will be provided during the class (yours to keep!)

You may bring your own materials to class or if you wish to purchase prior to the start of the first class, you will receive a 10% discount on materials, excluding patterns.
